At some point during one’s quest through Valheim, Fine Wood will be needed to progress the game even further.
An integral part of upgrading one’s Workbench to Level 4 and establishing portals, this resource is a hot commodity throughout the world. However, the game doesn’t tell you where to find it, so players are a bit stumped when they finally need Fine Wood.
Luckily, we know exactly where you can find it and what you need beforehand.
Finding Fine Wood in Valheim

The actual location of Fine Wood isn’t very far from your initial starting point. While it can be found in a couple of different places, the most prevalent is through Birch trees. The white and black tree is found all throughout the Meadows biome of Valheim but if you try to swing a Stone or Flint axe at one, you’ll receive a message saying it’s too hard to chop down.
If you want to chop down Birch trees and start collecting Fine Wood, you need to craft a Bronze axe. This tool can only be acquired after you defeat the game’s first boss, Eikthyr. We’ve outlined the best way to defeat him in a previous article, so check that out if you haven’t yet beaten the stag boss.
Once Eikthyr is defeated, you can move on to the next step of crafting a Bronze axe, which is to create the Antler Pickaxe so you can mine ore. Obviously, mining Bronze ore is the main task you want to accomplish once you create the pickaxe but you’ll also need a Forge to melt the Bronze down.

To create a Forge, you need to obtain Copper from a Smelter. You can read how to acquire Copper in our Valheim crafting guide. As for the Smelter, this can be created once you acquire surtling ore, which is found in random chests or from a Surtling drop.
After all of this is complete, you can create a Bronze axe using four Wood, eight Bronze and two Leather Scraps. The Bronze axe can then be used to chop down Birch trees and receive small amounts of Fine Wood.
If you don’t want to go through all of that though, Fine Wood can also be found in shipwrecks off the coast of the Black Forest. This isn’t a sure-fire way to acquire the resource, however, so making a Bronze axe is the safer option. That's all about how to get fine wood in Valheim.
