10 Best Movies Like Grease That Aren't Musicals

August 2024 ยท 6 minute read

For those who love Grease but not the musical format, here are some other movie suggestions with similar themes and a few with the same star.

Grease is an American classic that engages enduring generations of fans. The film helped launch Olivia Newton's John's career and cemented John Travolta's leading man status. The movie's songs, costumes, acting, sets, and script all help make this film the beloved hallmark of American culture it is.

But while Grease has its fair share of fans, many love it more for the story than its musical elements. For those who are a fan of the movie but don't care for the musical format, here are some other movie suggestions.

10 Urban Cowboy (1980) - Stream On Paramount+

John Travolta's follow-up to Grease, Urban Cowboy did not call on Travolta to sing, but it did count on him to dance. The film revolves around a traditional country boy, Bud, who hastily gets involved in a tempestuous marriage with strong-willed Sissy in the backdrop of a popular Houston bar.

Much like Grease, this film spawned a successful soundtrack that featured popular country-rock acts like Boz Scaggs, Linda Ronstadt, Charlie Daniels Band, and Kenny Rogers.

9 She's All That (1999) - Rent From Amazon Video

Opposites attract in this popular movie from the late '90s. The movie looks at high school jock, Zach, who takes on a bet to make the most unpopular girl in school this year's prom queen. Both this film and Grease share the common denominator of two teens falling for one another despite the established school hierarchy.

Too, both this film and Grease share iconic makeover sequences. Sandy emerging into the school fair with her skin-tight black jumpsuit complete with a cigarette dangling from her mouth is on par with the scene when unpopular Laney Boggs cascades down the stairs, completely transformed in her red dress.

8 Dirty Dancing (1987) - Stream On Hulu

"Nobody puts Baby in a corner" is one of cinema's most recognized lines thanks to this classic romance. In the Catskills, young Baby falls in love with the resort's dance instructor. As the pair gets to know each other while preparing for a show, the two forget about their differences and form a caring relationship.

Like Grease, this film shares the opposites attract angle for the romance between the film's protagonists. While this film is not a musical, this movie's fantastic '80s soundtrack is often labeled as one of the best.

7 Clueless (1995) - Stream On HBO Max

A movie that has an intense focus on the high school social hierarchy in the same vein as Grease, Clueless is a must-watch for fans of the musical. The movie follows popular Beverly Hills teen Cher, as she plays matchmaker to those around her.

Clueless's fashions also are hard to beat, with many admirers replicating the recognizable outfits. Too, the film's script and use of unique slang have placed this movie in a category all its own.

6 American Graffiti (1973) - Stream On Hulu

Teenagers in the early '60s and their adventures during one fateful night is the subject of this George Lucas work. Like Grease, the different kinds of teens and their respective subcultures are presented to the audience. The film's look at rock n roll and car culture was similar to Grease's. However, American Grafitti has a more realistic and down to Earth presentation of its characters and events.

Made pre-Star Wars, this movie showed that Lucas was capable of personal and heartfelt stories in contrast to his early esoteric work, like the science fiction THX 1138.

5 The Breakfast Club (1985) - Stream On AMC+

A John Hughes movie, The Breakfast Club looks at the importance placed on reputation despite other desires. Much in line with Grease and its characters, who don't want to disturb the status quo, this movie shows the intense pressures teens at the time faced within their social cliques.

Much deeper than Grease, this film explained the reasoning behind the social groups' staunch rules and why the protagonists could not freely mix with one another in the school halls.

4 Valley Girl (1983) - Stream On Pluto TV

Valley Girl could be looked at as Grease transported to '80s Los Angeles. In the movie, a valley girl falls in love with a Hollywood punk, much to the chagrin of her judgmental friends. It's a Romeo and Juliet for '80s Los Angeles, much like how Grease served as a forbidden love-type story for the '50s.

This movie puts two members of two completely different social circles together and the struggles they endure because of their comingling. The valley vernacular is so funny and clever that it will be hard for viewers to not say lines like, "Gag me with a spoon!" after watching.

3 Some Kind Of Wonderful (1987) - Stream On Hulu

Keith, from the wrong side of the tracks, is in love with wealthy Amanda in this underrated '80s teen movie. Class struggles amid the high school popularity ladder is Some Kind of Wonderful's focus, akin to Grease. Wealthy Amanda does not give Keith the time of day, despite his devotion for her. This is much to the disappointment of Keith's outcast best friend, Watts.

From the empathetic mind of John Hughes, the movie shows a true understanding of how frustrating the caste system of high school can be, especially for those who are considered less than.

2 The Outsiders (1983) - Stream On Fubo TV

A look at '50s greasers, this movie tells the story of orphaned Ponyboy Curtis and comments on the unstable home and economic lives of the Greaser characters, who form their own chosen family for some form of stability, comfort, and protection.

Both films deal with the idea of masculinity. Where Danny and Kinicky can barely even hug before pushing each other away and putting on tough-guy personas, the greasers of The Outsiders show love and affection, but they are also quick to violence.

1 Saturday Night Fever (1977) - Stream On HBO Max

This disco-centric film is mandatory viewing for fans of Grease. One of John Travolta's best roles, he stars as Brooklyn store clerk Tony, who lives for his weekends at the disco. When faced with the opportunity of a dance competition, Tony enlists the help of the talented but snooty Stephanie.

Saturday Night Fever was so popular during its release that it is said that the movie helped elongate disco's supremacy in the music scene when it was previously floundering. The acting in this film is top-notch and the dancing is, of course, stellar. Travolta does all his own dancing in the movie, adding to the kitchen sink realism the film presents.
