FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — The Florence County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina arrested two women after a child in their care went missing and wandered into a swamp.
According to deputies, they were called to a home on East Old Marion Road on Sunday, Jan. 28 around 1:45 p.m. about a missing 2-year-old.
When they arrived at the scene, officials said they discovered that the child had been missing since approximately 11:30 a.m.
Fortunately, investigators found the child unharmed in a nearby wooded area after a search was conducted.
Grace Lee Richardson, 24, the mother of the child was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
She allegedly did not maintain adequate safety measures at the residence to prevent her 2-year-old from going missing, the sheriff's office said. They added that Richardson also failed to notify law enforcement after she found out her child was missing even though he had a history of escaping the home.
Destiny Raven Necole Jordan, 22, is the child's aunt and was also charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
When Jordan was allegedly asleep, the child left the home unsupervised and wandered into a swamp while he was under her care, according to deputies. They also said Jordan knew that the child had a history of escaping the home and did not immediately contact authorities when she realized the 2-year-old was missing.
Richardson was released from the Florence County Detention Center on a $10,000 surety bond on Friday and Jordan was released on a $10,000 surety bond on Saturday.
